[WEBINAR] Addressing Firearms in the Context of Domestic and Dating Violence Under the STOP Formula Grant Program
November 7, 2024
The connection between firearms and domestic violence homicide is well-documented. State and federal laws prohibit certain domestic abusers from possessing, purchasing, and transferring firearms, but these laws, by themselves, are not self-implementing. They require thoughtfully-designed programs, well-planned programmatic structures, and coordinated responses to turn policy into actionable steps for protecting survivors and their communities. The STOP Formula Grant Program’s multiple purpose areas provide a broad platform for the implementation of strategies and approaches that address the dangers associated with firearms within the context of domestic and dating violence.
During this webinar developed specifically for state and territorial STOP Administrators, you will learn about:
- Why limiting access to firearms in the context of gender based violence is a safety and enforcement priority;
- Federal laws that address this issue, including recent expansions covering additional types of victimization, as well as how they intersect with existing state laws;
- Requirements of the “Judicial Notification” certification that all states and territories must submit as part of an application for STOP funding; and
- The types of projects that are fundable under STOP, including examples presented by representatives from two jurisdictions: Denver, CO and St. Louis County, MO.
