Domestic Violence Report: Texas Court’s Radical Firearms Decision Jeopardizes Domestic Violence Survivors
August 3, 2023
“Earlier this year, a federal court in Texas found unconstitutional the prohibition preventing those restrained by qualifying domestic violence orders of protection from having or owning or possessing firearms and ammunition during the time a qualifying civil protective domestic violence order is in place under 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(8)“.
This radical decision has significant impacts on survivors, and how practitioners work to secure safety, reduce firearm injury and homicide in cases involving domestic violence. To learn more about the Court’s ruling and its impact, please read the April/May issue of the Domestic Violence Report featuring an article from domestic violence and gun violence expert, Julia Weber, JD, MSW.
BWJP would like to extend our gratitude to the Domestic Violence Report for allowing us to share this publication with practitioners and grantees of the US Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women.
