Firearms and Domestic Violence: The Intersections
July 4, 2024
Firearms and Domestic Violence: The Intersections was published on December 13, 2016 by the Department of Justice, but it remains a crucial resource.
Courtesy of Principal Deputy Director Bea Hanson, Ph.D., of the Office on Violence Against Women, the page describes how domestic abusers and firearms are a deadly combination. According to the webpage, “Research published in the American Journal of Public Health found that the presence of a gun in domestic violence situations significantly increases the risk of homicide, endangering victims, other family members, bystanders and coworkers.”
The page goes on to describe a panel the Justice Department hosted on October 7, 2016 to discuss the potentially deadly intersection of firearms and domestic violence in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In addition to the panel discussion, the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence and Firearms’s own Kristine Lizdas, J.D presented the program’s new website.
